Biography
I practiced law in Washington for over 39 years. I am also qualified as a long haul truck driver.
I am a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law (J.D. 1969) where I was the Managing Editor of the Washington Law Review. I graduated 5th in my class and was selected to the Order of the Coif.
I did my undergraduate work at the University of Denver (B.A. 1966) where I majored in Political Science with minors in economics, international relations, history and geology. At DU I was a member and officer of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, DU Chapter.
I grew up in Mound, Minnesota where my mother and father owned and operated Mound Hardware. My father comes from Ruete, Switzerland. My mother comes from Appleton, Minnesota. Both are now deceased. I have two brothers, George and Jack.
I began my legal career in Washington D. C. I was in Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) assigned to the Washington Research Project. WRP later became the Children's Defense Fund. At WRP I worked mainly with Harry Huge on a case involving various breaches of trust by the United Mine Workers relative to the UMW Welfare and Retirement Fund. I also worked with Richard Sobel, Marian Wright Edelman and Rick Seymour.
For many years I worked as an office lawyer primarily in Seattle and Spokane. First at Davis Wright Todd Reise & Jones in Seattle and next at Lukins & Annis PS in Spokane.
In the fall of 1990 I opened my own law office in Spokane. The purpose of my law office was to allow me to do more public interest, public trust advocacy and litigation besides carrying on a normal practice. Also, about this time, I began the redevelopment of three turn of the century buildings in downtown Spokane -- Stewart, Minnesota and Oakley buildings. See MinnOak.com.
During the 1990's I became active in local political affairs. I advocated a change of the City of Spokane Charter to change the form of government to from a council-manager form to a strong mayor form. The charter was changed as a result of the second initiative I advanced. Also, I was a Spokane City Council Member from 2000 through 2003.
Presently, I spend most of my time caring for the Minnesota and Oakley buildings, writing, and long haul truck driving when I get the chance.
